Solar energy tie-in set for electric Ford Focus sedan

Ford recently announced that it is teaming with established solar provider, SunPower, to sell a solar energy system through Ford dealers in conjunction with its Focus Electric sedan that goes on sale later this year. Solar panels mounted on the car owner’s house wouldn’t necessarily directly charge the electric car’s batteries. Rather, they would provide energy from the sun to the house that would offset about 1,000 miles of driving a month in the electric version of the new Focus compact sedan.

To generate enough solar power for an electric-car offset, the system will have about 147 square feet of roof panels. The 2.5-kilowatt system will produce about 3,000 kilowatt hours of electricity a year.

With the solar power option, Ford is targeting environmentalist buyers who have figured out that even driving a plug-in EV isn’t truly green because electricity is often made by burning fossil fuels at power plants.

At Oak Electric, we applaud Ford’s latest environmentally conscious efforts. Oak Electric is one of Southeast Michigan’s leading renewable energy providers. It is no coincidence that the solar panels we use in our installations are from SunPower and that we are an authorized SunPower Premier Dealer.

For over 20 years, SunPower has been a leading provider of clean solar energy across the globe. With a commitment to quality unlike any other, SunPower offers something no one else does: the highest efficiency panels on the residential market combined with a streamlined design and stellar service.
