Holiday Electrical Safety Reminder

It’s that time of year when we go all out with the holiday lighting and electrical decorations as part of how we celebrate the season.

Did you know that more than 80% of Americans decorate their homes as part of their winter holiday celebrations?  Almost two-thirds of respondents use electric lights in their indoor decorating scheme, while more than half use lighted decorations outside their homes. More than 70% of those who decorate their homes for the holiday utilize at least one extension cord.

As much as we enjoy “lighting up the season,” we need to be aware of these statistics from the U.S. Fire Administration:

  • From December 24th through the 26th, fire deaths, injuries, and dollar loss increase an average of 50%, 61%, and 43%, respectively.
  • Christmas trees, which are in one-third of all households, dry out, the risk of fires increases.
  • The use of candles contributes to the increase in the incidence of holiday fires.

The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) offers a wealth of tips on Christmas tree safety; candle safety; childproof decorating; indoor and outdoor light and electrical décor safety; and post-holiday safety. Be sure to check out their website at http://www.esfi.org.

And remember, that Oak Electric offers every customer a Free Electrical Safety Inspection while we are on your job. This includes checking the electrical service panel and main service cable; inspecting and testing GFCI receptacles; checking location and performance of smoke detectors.
