Solar Power Is Gaining Mainstream Acceptance

Posted on May 16, 2014
The Solar Energy Industries Association reports that solar photovoltaic (PV) installations reached 4,751 megawatts (MW) in 2013—a 41 percent increase over 2012, setting a new record for annual solar growth in the U.S. The additional installations brought the total PV capacity to over 12,000 MW, made up of over 440,000 solar electric systems. What this means is that solar power is now hitting the mainstream. It was the second-largest source of electricity generating capacity installed in the... Read more

Some Facts About the U.S. Electrical Grid

Posted on April 9, 2014
The U.S. electric grid delivers electricity to more than 144 million end-use customers in the United States. Construction of the grid was started in the late 1880s and continues today. About 70 percent of the grid’s transmission lines and power transformers are now over 25 years old; the average age of power plants is over 30 years. As most of us know, the U.S. electric grid is highly vulnerable to severe weather, which is the leading cause of power outages in the United States. Between 2003... Read more

Michigan’s Utilities are Meeting Renewable Energy Goals

Posted on January 9, 2014
In 2008, Gov. Jennifer Granholm signed into law comprehensive energy reforms. In addition to removing barriers to investing in environmentally friendly, new baseload generation needed by the state, the new law established Michigan’s first Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS). The RPS requires 10 percent of the state’s electricity supply to come from renewable sources by 2015. Michigan’s utilities are expected to meet the 10 percent goal by 2015, at costs that have been cut in half since... Read more

Updates on Solar Power Use in the U.S.

Posted on September 5, 2013
Here are some interesting recent facts and developments concerning solar power use: According to the U.S. Energy Department, the amount of solar energy falling on the United States in one hour of noontime summer sun is about equal to the annual U.S. electricity demand. A Gallup poll earlier this year found that 76% of Americans thought the country should put more emphasis on producing domestic energy from solar power. It seems that increasing numbers of U.S. homeowners are relying on the sun... Read more

Using Solar Panels with Battery Backup

Posted on August 25, 2013
Getting energy from the sun is great under most circumstances. But because most solar systems are “grid tied” these days, people who have solar panels without battery backup are subject to power outages just like everyone else. If you live in an area that experiences frequent power outages but want to keep your connection to the utility grid, a grid-tied with battery backup system—like the one Oak Electric recently installed for homeowners in Lake Orion—might be just the thing for... Worldwide Solar Power Reaches 100 GW Milestone in 2012

Posted on April 15, 2013
As of the end of 2012, the total grid-connected solar PV capacity worldwide reached 100 gigawatts, according to the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA). Last year, eight countries added one gigawatt (or more) of PV capacity, and now 13 countries have exceeded one gigawatt of cumulative installations. Almost 17 GW was installed in Europe alone – though that’s down from a record 23 GW in 2011 – with the top markets being Germany, Italy and France. Outside of Europe, China was... Read more

Are Solar Panels Effective in Cold Weather?

Posted on October 22, 2012
With winter approaching, you may be inclined to put off installing solar panels for your home or business because you think the snow and cold will affect your solar panel system. The average temperature in a climate region does not have an effect on solar panels. In fact, solar panels are actually slightly more efficient at producing electricity in cold temperatures.  So even if you live in a colder climate that is further north, you still get enough sunlight that solar panels will work....
